The history of The Zone Rescue Corps - briefly The Zone Rescue Corps was an independent rescue corps which competed with Falcks Redningskorps (Falck´s Rescue Corps) from 1930 to 1962.In 1925, Falck´s Rescue Corps in Copenhagen established a fire guard in Eskildstrup on Falster. Such fire guards were being established all over the country and they were called Zone Fire Guards, as they each covered a certain zone. In 1930 Falck and the fire guard in Eskildstrup broke with each other. The break resulted in the men behind the fire guard establishing their own fire and rescue corps which they called The Zone Rescue Corps. At the break they took a number of Zone Fire Guards with them. Henceforth Denmark had two private rescue corps, Falck and Zonen. The competition between the two corps was fierce. Zonen was the small one and had to come up with ideas in order to be noticed. Zonen was the first to introduce maritime rescue service, air ambulance service, disaster posts, donor corps as well as many other initiatives. The price war between the two corps put a curb on the financial possibilities and in 1962 negotiations on a merging were entered. As off 1st January 1963 the merging was a reality and the corps were merged into Falck-Zonen. However, in 1977 Falck stopped using the name "Zonen". This resulted in disappointment among many former employees and other enthusiasts and steps were taken to the establishment of a museum which could preserve the memory of The Zone Rescue Corps for posterity. The museum has been established with the purpose of preserving the history of The Zone Rescue Corps and its employees. The work on the museum was started in 1983, 20 years after The Zone Rescue Corps had closed down. It has only been possible to gather so many effects from the corps due to former employees from Zonen who had kept them. In this way, the museum bears testimony to a great commitment among the employees. The museum has been established and is run on a voluntary basis. |
